De-cluttering is one of the hardest things for people to do, including myself. After being in so many cluttery homes, I really do appreciate walking into a clean and clutter free home. It always looks, and more importantly; feels better. So whether you’re selling you’re house or just want to live more comfortably, it’s something you should work on.

I actually used to be one of those people that would say “I don’t mind a little mess, I can always find everything.” Now a days I can honestly say that was my denial talking. I have found that living with too many things and not enough space takes a toll on your mental state whether you believe it now or not.

My tipping point, started this on going project.  It happened soon after I offered and had my younger brother move in with me.  Just a just a couple months in I reached that point of realization. I needed to change small Boston apartment and my life.

The past couple years I have been working to find new ways that work for me to keep clean and organized. It didn’t take long for me to realize it’s not something that happens overnight.  It seems like everything in life that has to be maintained, it takes desire,  and a lot of hard work.

Please don’t be scared though! It can actually be fun, rewarding, aesthetically pleasing. It could and most likely will, have a huge positive impact on your everyday life.

Future blog posts I hope will encourage and give new ideas to help you get through it if you decide to take that first step. Always feel free and I really encourage you to share your comments, opinions, personal experiences, tips and anything you want to add.

Here are a couple first steps that will make a huge impact, that you can start… RIGHT NOW!

Step 1. Grab a trash bag & find everything & anything that is GARBAGE & throw it the bag! I am talking about actual items that you will never, ever need, and that should have been put in that garbage a long time ago. Once that is done, get it out of your house and put it by the curb to be taken away! Don’t wait to do this, it will feel so good!!

Step 2. Visualize everything that you can live without & set a designated area for all of it. Try to remember your main goal durning this step.  Which for me is “ Live as easily/clutter free as possible.”  And for the things you think you may need at “some point” Step 3 might make you feel better about putting it in that same pile.

Step 3. Sell things that are of value! You’ll be surprised what people are looking for and will pay for. Craigslistmight be the easiest way to do so (especially for heavy and large items). It requires little effort and people will just come and pick it up from you, with cash in hand. (Don’t even think about shipping to people on Craigslist!) E-bay is also a great tool but requires a little more effort and knowledge.  If you aren’t familiar ask someone you know who is, and they I’m sure will be happy to show you how, or even sell it for you. Now you don’t have to feel bad about getting rid of things, because if you ever need to re-buy something, you will have money from items that you sold!

Step 4. Give items away. Either to a family member, a friend, goodwill, other other charity services, used book or movie stores. The items that are keeping you from having a clean and happy home, could make someones a happy home.

Once you have completed these steps; you will be well on your way to living more comfortably! You will have so much less to worry about! Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. Start room by room. Take deep breaths & breaks when you need to! And Please check back in, and let us know how you did and what your experience was. By then I should have the next couple steps for you to take!
